The five individuals pictured in caricatures above represent the heart and soul of the Albany Boys’ Club from the period beginning in 1946 and continuing through 1987. Under their leadership the Albany Boys’ Club found new homes at the Delaware Avenue Clubhouse in 1956, (which is still in use today), as well as the Livingston Avenue Clubhouse which was sold in 1987.
Tom Bender, the Executive Director, starting in 1946, led a group of former orphans named Fred Schroeder, Al Singleman, and Pete Christopher. Fred Schroeder was the Director at the Livingston Avenue Clubhouse. Pete Christopher was the Director at the Delaware Clubhouse. Al Singleman served at both locations as the Athletic Director. Later, Peter DiLillo joined this group in 1958 where he served in various roles at the Livingston Avenue clubhouse including Director. All served at the Albany Boys’ Club’s summer camp, Camp Thacher, located on Thompson’s Lake, now the home of the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature center.
Together they reflect 41 years of dedicated service. During that 41 year period the lives of Albany’s youth were positively influenced. We are thankful for their hard work and dedication.
