Boys & Girls Clubs commemorated Black History Month with an evening at the Albany Clubhouse honoring local community leaders and featuring moving performances of music, dance and theater from local youth.

On Friday, Feb 21st, Boys & Girls Clubs held its annual Heroes Gala at the Albany Clubhouse in celebration of Black History Month. The event was hosted by David Gordon, Jr, Regional Program Director and opened with remarks from Justin Reuter, CEO. Special guest Barbara Howard sang a rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing. Youth-made art was curated as an event exhibit and sold for donations to The Club. Isiah Legrone, an aspiring chef and part of our youth development team, catered the event with a diverse and delicious menu.
BGCCA honored local leaders who have made positive contributions in their own unique ways to benefit the youth in our community:
Mr. Kevin Pryor
Kevin Pryor was born on February 20, 1966, in Troy, New York. He has a lifelong passion for advocacy, equality, social justice, and support. Currently, he serves as the Diversity Inclusion Outreach Director in the Troy Mayor's Office, where he works to enhance communication between local businesses, government agencies, youth, and communities.
Kevin's journey began with the tragic loss of his father on February 18, 1976, leaving him and his six siblings to navigate their grief together. At a young age, he took on significant responsibilities, fostering a deep sense of obligation and compassion for others. Basketball became his outlet during this challenging time, helping him cope and connect with others.
From early on, Kevin demonstrated strong leadership by organizing community events, including summer basketball leagues and family gatherings. He attended Troy High School, then earned his GED at Schenectady County Community College, where he studied human services. These experiences shaped his dedication to social justice and community service.
At 17, Kevin began his community work by bringing people together through various events. Now, over 35 years later, he continues this work as the founder of Troy Look, Inc., recruiting over a hundred local children and parents to serve as coaches and chaperones. Known for his friendly demeanor and problem-solving skills, he has become a trusted figure in his community, leaving a legacy of optimism and support.
In summary, Kevin Pryor exemplifies how one person's commitment can transform a community. His dedication to inclusivity, effective communication, and event planning has positively impacted many lives in Troy. Through his role at the mayor's office, he persistently advocates for all voices to be heard and strives to create a safe haven for children and families, reflecting his unwavering passion and desire to help others.
Judge Ricja Rice
Ricja was recently elected as Albany Family Court Judge. Prior to that position she was a city court judge. She has presided over civil, criminal and family court matters for 4 years.
Outside of court, she is known for speaking at area high schools, colleges, law school classes and on panel discussions. As the first in her family to graduate from college and attend law school, she believes it is her duty to help crush barriers to obtaining a higher education. Ricja is a mentor to many recent law school graduates. She is also the President of the Capital District Black and Hispanic Bar Association and past president of the Capital District Women's Bar Association.
Ricja is a loving and devoted mom and bonus-mom to four beautiful children - ages 26, 16 (twins), and 9, plus a 10-year-old miniature pinscher. She is an active cheer, theater, and dance mom and loves to garden. Ricja is the President of the Capital District Black and Hispanic Bar Association, Past President of the Capital District Women's Bar Association, and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Boys and Girls Club, Jack and Jill Inc., and the NAACP.
DJ Young Wise
DJ Young wise as a local black hero. Born on November 24th, 1968 as Michael W Fallen in downtown Albany as an only child, a father of 5 , DJ young wise is a stepfather to 3, and a loving grandfather and husband. DJ Young Wise started his DJ career at the age of 13 years old. As a young man he started a group called Zat Fire Crew, while Attending Albany High School, his first DJ name was flash, through the years he continued to Dj all over NYC and Albany ny with well known DJ’s such as Kidcapri, Doowoop and SES to name a few. DJ Young Wise also donates his time to the boys and girls club functions such as their Christmas and Stop the Violence events. DJ Young Wise continues to make Albany dance with his old school and new school vibe.
The event also featured a variety of performances from local youth of all ages. These included acts of dance, live music, spoken word, and closed with a moving performance from Black Seeds Theater highlighting the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
